turned into the gymnasium of higher sciences.
1821 “The Southern Society” emerged instead of
Tul’chyn board after disintegration of “The
Union of Prosperity”.Their aim was to throw
down autocracy by means of a military
takeover and turn Russia into a centralized
republic with on-chamber parliament. They
also wanted to liquidate serfdom. The
Decembrist organization was active in three
boards of Ukraine:
1) in Tul’chyn (headed by P. Pestel’, the
author of the program “The Russian Truth”);
2) in Kam’yanets (headed by V. Davydov and
S. Volkonsky);
3) in Valyl’kiv (headed by S. Muravyov-
Apostol).
1823 “The Society of United Slavs” appeared in
Novohrad-Volynsky. It was founded by
brothers A. And P. Borysovs. In 1825 it
joined “The Southern Society”. Decembrists
saw the solution of Ukrainian issue in
different ways:
1) P. Pestel' saw Russia as a single
inseparable state;
2) Brothers Borysovs wanted to organize the
federation of Slavic republics, but Ukraine
was not mentioned as a member of that
federation.
December, 14 “The Southern Society” initiated the
1825 uprising in Petersburg, having taken
advantage of the tsar Olersandr I. The
