children of nobility and officials.
1806–1812 The Russo-Turkish war, which ended in
defeat of Turkey. According to the Treaty of
Bucharest (1812), Russia obtained lands
between The Dniester and the Prut rivers.
They got the name of Bessarabia. There were
lands populated by Ukrainians mostly –
Izmayil, Akerman and Khotyn districts
neighbouring territories populated by
Moldavians.
1812 Invasion of the Russian Empire by French
troops. The Russian-French war. Political
plans of Napoleon as for Ukraine provided
separation of Ukrainian lands from Russia
and their further division. The part of Right-
bank Ukraine was to go to the Duchy of
Warsaw (Poland), Volyn’ – to Austria; left-
bank and southern Ukraine were supposed to
be the basis for formation of three states-
“napoleonides” –military-administrative
formations under the protectorate of France.
The Black Sea coast and the Crimea were to
be given to Turkey.
July- The formation of Ukrainian Cossack host
September and voluntary military forces. According to
1812 Oleksandr’s I manifest, Cossack regiments
were formed. They were promised that after
the war they would be considered free
Cossacks with assigned land plots. Voluntary
military forces were represented by serfs by
agreement of landlords. People of other
