in Warsaw. Gradually it enveloped Right-
bank Ukraine, where it was headed by “the
union of loyal sons of Podillya” organized in
Kam’yanets-Podilskyi. To attract oppressed
peoples on their side, the Poles create the
motto “For our and your freedom”. The
uprising was not supported by peasants of
Right-bank Ukraine as Polish landlords did
not intend to free peasants but insisted on
joining Ukraine the future Polish state. The
uprising was violently crushed by the Russian
troops, The defeat of the Polish weakened
their positions in Right-bank Ukraine
considerably. The majority of rebels were
exiled to Siberia. Many rebels were turned
into soldiers and sent to fight with mountain
dwellers in Caucasus. A few thousand of
noblemen were deprived of nobility, their
estates were confiscated.
1831 In left-bank Ukraine the last remnants of self-
governance (Magdeburg Law) were
destroyed. Kyiv lost Magdeburg Law in 1835,
despite the fact that Magdeburg Law was
guaranteed to Ukraine by ‘March articles” of
1654.
1831 Izmayil Sreznevsky published “The
Ukrainian almanac” in Kharkiv. It was a
collection of folk songs and original poetry.
1834 Kyiv University was founded on the basis of
Kremenets lyceum. At first there was only a
philosophy department consisting of history
and philology section and physics and
mathematics section. In 1835 the department
