raise other peoples to struggle for national
liberation, etc.
The practical activity of the Society consisted
in making up proclamations to “the brothers
of Rus and the Poles”, circulation of T.
Shevchenko’s works, they developed a set of
projects aimed at introduction of primary
educational establishments in Ukraine, book
publishing. It existed for 14 months, was
exposed after provocateur student Petrov’s
denunciation and was destroyed by
gendarmes. The members were sentenced to
different terms of imprisonment and exile. T.
Shevchenko was punished in the most violent
way: he was sent to be a soldier for 10 years
and was forbidden to write and paint.
The Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and
Methodius became the first political
organization of Ukrainian intellectuals with a
program of national revival of Ukraine. The
appearance and activity of the Society became
the beginning of transition from folklore-and-
ethnographic to literary-and-enlightening
(propagandist) stage of the national
development.
1847– 1848 „Inventory reforms” the governor-general
Bibikov on the territory of the right-bank
Ukraine. They were caused by the extremely
violent exploitation of peasants in the right-
bank Ukraine. The essence of the reforms:
- the self-will of landlords was restricted;
- an exact order of compulsory service for a
