department appeared. Mykhailo
Maksymovych was appointed the first rector
of the university. In 1834 there were 62
students as compared with the year of 1855
(808).
1834 I. Sreznevsky published an article “The View
of monuments to Ukrainian folk language
and literature”. It was the first printed public
action in defense of the Ukrainian language.
1839 The Uniat Church was liquidated in Volyn’.
In 1831 the Russian government Pochayiv
Lavra was taken away from Basilian monks.
In 1832 The Rank of Basilian Fathers was
liquidated.
1839 Society of history and antiquities was
established in Odesa.
1840- 1842 Legal proceedings by Lithuanian statutes
were liquidated. “The Code of Laws of the
Russian Empire” became valid in Ukraine.
1840 “Kobzar” by T. Shevchenko was published
in Petersburg. It demonstrated the whole
world a wide range of lexical, semantic and
phraseological varieties of the Ukrainian
language. The paramount importance of
“Kobzar” lies not only in consolidation of the
Ukrainian language, but also in ardent defense
of social and national interests of Ukrainian
people and proclamation of democratic ideas.
1843 The formation of The Temporary
Commission of Study of Early Texts, which
dealt with search and publication of written
sources.
