out different agricultural works. Their
children – cantonists were subjected to
military drilling from the age of 7. Military
settlers did not have any personal rights and
liberties including the right to have landed
property. Their working day was scheduled,
their personal life was under strict
supervision. Military settlements were
abolished in 1857.
1817 Uprising of the Buh Cossacks in Kherson
region. It was headed by Panas Babychenko
and Herasym Het’manenko. Ten-thousand
Russian army was gathered to crush the
uprising. It was suppressed. One hundred
rebels were sentenced to execution, were
flogged and penal servitude.
1817 The tsar government ordered to close Kyiv-
Mohyla Academy. The ecclesiastical academy
was opened in its premises in two years,
which existed till 1920. Kyiv-Mohyla
Academy was restored in 1991 and given the
status of international university.
1817– 1822 Emergence of Masonic lodges in Ukraine.
Masons represented a type of social
movement. They professed and idea of God –
The Great Master of the Universe and an idea
of united community of people. The masons’
motto was “Freedom, equality, fraternity”.

Evksynsky’ (70 members). It was founded by
count O. Lanzheron. The members of the
lodge: I. Orlai, I. Kotlyarevsky and other. The
lodge “Three kingdoms of nature” included
