1687 Unsuccessful campaign of Russian and
Ukrainian armies against the Crimea. 150-
thousand Russian headed by V. Holitsyn and
50-thousand Ukrainian army under the
command of I. Samoilovych failed to get over
Perekop to the Crimea. I. Samoilovych was
accused of the campaign failure, got arrested
and exiled in Tobolsk.
ТHEME 10. The hetman rule of I. Mazepa. Destruction of
Ukrainian statehood by tsarism (the beginning of the XVIII-th
– the last quarter of the XVIII-th century).
July On the river Kolomak the Cossack council
1708 elected Ivan Mazepa hetman. Kolomak
articles were signed based on the previous
Gluhiv articles. 22 articles were concluded
with 5 of them complete. Though those
articles formally confirmed “the former rights
and liberties of Little Russian people”,
actually they restricted hetman power and
autonomy of Ukraine:
1) hetman could be elected with the
knowledge of the tsar;
2) hetman did not have the right to deprive
general starshynas of their posts without a
tsar’s decree;
3) starshyna and Cossacks were to keep an
eye on hetman and report to the tsar when he
