articles  concluded  between  the  Council  and
                              hetman.  They  were  called  “Constitutions  of
                              Rights  and  Freedoms  of  the  Zaporizhian
                              Host”  and  are  known  as  “Constitution  of
                              Pylyp Orlyk”. According to it:
                              1)  Ukraine  was  proclaimed  independent  on
                              Poland and Russia, free from any foreign rule
                              in all of its borders (art. 2);
                              2)  hetman  autocracy  was  confined  by  the
                              General  council.  Hetman  did  not  have  the
                              right to issue important resolutions without its
                              approval (art. 6);
                              3)  hetman did not have the right to examine
                              legal  cases  against  starshyna,  the  General
                              Court was to proceed it (art. 7);
                              4)  it  was  planned  to  divide  between  the
                              national treasury,  which was to be governed
                              by  elected  general  treasurer  and  profits
                              “intended for hetman and mace” (art. 9);
                              5)  hetman  was  obliged  to  “keep  an  eye  on
                              ordinary Cossacks for them not to put excess
                              extortion and robbery” (art. 10);
                              6)  authorities  had  to  take  care  of  Cossack
                              widows and orphans (art. 11);
                              7)  state  monopolies,  farmings,  fair  taxes,
                              lease and stations were abolished (art. 14, 15);
                              8)  were  obliged  to  clear  the  Dnieper  from
                              Moscow  fortresses  and  give  the  town  of
                              Trakhtemyriv back to Cossacks (art. 4, 5);
                              9)  there  was    one  Orthodox  religion  to  be
                              confirmed  in  Ukraine.  Hetman  had  to
                              “prevent establishment of any foreign religion
                              in our motherland of Rus” (art. 1);
