                              O.  Menshykov.  All  population  was  killed.
                              Ukrainian  towns  Lebedyn  and  Romny  were
                              ruined.  Civilian  residents  charged  with
                              “treason” were executed.
            November          Peter  I  declared  Ivan  Skoropadskyi  hetman
            1708              with residence in Gluhiv.
            March             Mazepa and a part of Zaporozhian Cossacks
            1709              headed  by  kosh  otaman  Kost’  Hordiyenko
                              joined the Swedes.
            May               By  order of  Peter  I  Russian  army  destroyed
            1709              Chortomlyk Sich. Those who escaped death,
                              founded  the  so-called  Oleshiv  Sich  on  Tatar
                              territory.
            June              The  battle  of  Poltava  ended  in  defeat  of
            1709              Swedish  army  and  I.  Mazepa,  their  “ally”.
                              Flinging  off  the  pursuing  Russian  cavalry,
                              Carl    XII  and  Mazepa  found  shelter  in
                              Moldaviya, which was under the protectorate
                              of Turkey.
            September         I. Mazepa’s death in Bendery. He was buried
            1709              in  Saint  George’s  Church  in  the  town  of
                              Halats. His grave is not preserved.
            April             The Cossack council in the town of Bendery
            1710              elected Pylyp Orlyk, a former scribe, hetman
                              in  emigration.  There  were  16  agreement
