Thus, P. Orlyk’s Constitution contained
liberal-democratic principles (in particular,
separation of executive, legislative and
judicial power was consolidated), that
testified to initiation of parliamentarism
foundation.
Spring The joint campaign of Ukrainian army
1711 headed by P. Orlyk and Tatars in order to
liberate Right-bank Ukraine from Russia.
The population gave them a warm welcome
first, right-bank regiments joined Orlyk, but
Tatars began to plunder and harry land. It
ruined everything. P. Orlyk had to retreat to
Moldaviya.
1711 In spring Peter I initiated counterattack
dealing cruelly with the popularion that had
favoured Orlyk. People of Right0bank
Ukraine were taken by force to the lands of
Hetmanate, Sloboda Ukraine and the south of
Russia. Near the town of Yassy Russian army
was surrounded by Turkish-Tatar armies.
Peter I escaped death thanks to a huge bribe to
the Turkish vizier (he was decapitated later by
order of the sultan). In summer the treaty of
the Pruth was signed. According to its terms
Russia had to give Azov and its surroundings
to Turkey, destroy Tahanroh and
Novobohorodytsya fortresses, stay away from
polish affairs. However, Orlyk did not have
forces strong enough to occupy Right-bank
Ukraine and Poland took advantage of that
circumstance.
