monopoly of the CPU power was destroyed.
During 1990-1991 nearly 20 oppositional to
CPU parties appeared.
March, 15 For the first time during the Soviet period on
1990 the official building (the city hall of Stryi) a
blue-and-yellow flag was raised.
March-May The elections to the Supreme Council of
1990 Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and
local Councils. The elections were conducted
on the alternative basis, it was a considerable
victory of democratic forces, which managed
to ignore the communist Law about elections.
For 450 mandates to the Supreme Council
there were about 3 thousand candidates, that
is 6-7 people for one mandate. Despite the
fact that elections took place in the conditions
of a single-party system and the CPSU
monopoly of mass media, the Democratic
block gained considerable success: out of 442
elected deputies to the Supreme Council, 111
got its support. The block won in five oblasts:
Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil’, Volyn’ and
Kyiv. The CPSU’s monopoly of power
shattered.
