The situation with the Ukrainian language
was disastrous. In establishments of higher
education only 5% lectures were delivered in
Ukrainian. By 1989, no Ukrainian schools
were in Donetsk, Chernihiv, Kharkiv,
Luhansk, Mykolayiv. Books, published in
Ukrainian, made only 18% by title and only
3% by number of printed copies. It was the
result of the so-called “spiritual Chornobyl” –
russification. That is why, the law of October,
28 was particularly important for the
Ukrainian language rescue.
October, 29 526 victims’ remains of Stalin’s terror were
1989 reburied in Demyaniv Laz near Ivano-
Frankivsk. They were found and identified by
the society “Memorial”.
December, 1 During M. Horbachyov’s visit to the Vatican,
1989 it was officially declared about legalization of
Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. But the
first community of UGCC was legally
registered in May, 1990. On March, 31, 1991
cardinal Lyubachivsky moved from Rome to
Lviv.
January, 22 “The live chain” on the occasion of the 71-st
1990 anniversary of Unification of UPR and
WUPR. The live chain stretched from Ivano-
Frankivsk, through Lviv up to Kyiv. About 3
million people stood under the national flags.
January, 30 The renaming of Exarchate of Russian
1990 Orthodox Church into Ukrainian Orthodox
Church with the patriarchy in Moscow.
February, 9 The registration of PMU (People’s
1990 Movement of Ukraine - Rukh) as a social-
