had enough time to take their families out of
Kyiv. The consequences of the disaster
became a heavy burden on the economy of
Ukraine. The population living within 30 km
area from Chornobyl NPP was evacuated,
nearly 5 mln. hectares of land was lost, etc.
The tragedy became an impetus to revival of
Ukrainian society, dissatisfaction with actions
of authorities and struggle for the public
control of power.
May The regulation of CC CPSU “About struggle
1986 with unearned income”. Due to bureaucratic
and formal approach, it ended in fines of old
women, who were selling vegetables from
their own land. Commissions measured
summer cottages and forced to destroy those
above the norm, etc.
January The plenum of CC CPSU put the beginning to
1987 considerable personnel changes. By the end
of 1988, over 1000 of high-rank officials were
substituted.
August The formation of Ukrainian Cult urological
1987 Club in Kyiv, headed by Serhiy Naboka. It
was the first informal organization (out of
CPSU control). The appearance of informal
organizations on the political stage was
caused by open accusation of the existing
regime, critic of bad management, the
appearance of wide off-censorship press and
meetings, demonstrations as forms of
vindication of rights.
