Ministry of Culture of USSR by 1988, there
were 4.6 thousand monuments to V. Lenin on
governmental accounting in Ukraine.
October, 2-17 The political student hunger strike on the
1990 October revolution square in Kyiv, which was
called Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence
Square) by opposition. The students advanced
the following political demands:
1) resignation of V. Masol, the Chairman of
Council of Ministers;
2) new elections on the basis of multi-party
system in spring 1991;
3) adoption a resolution about nationalization
of CPSU and VLKSM (All-Union Lenin
Committee of Soviet Youth) property on the
territory of Ukraine;
4) denial of union treaty;
5) returning in Ukraine all citizens on military
service outside the republic.
The hunger strike lasted for 15 days with
hundreds of students as participants. Student
strikes and manifestations in Lviv, Ivano-
Frankivsk (October, 16) and other cities were
conducted to express support. Parliamentary
and communist majority were shaken. On
October, 17 the Supreme Council adopted the
resolution, which partially met the students’
demands. But only one demand was satisfied
in full scope – V. Masol’s resignation.
October, 24 The Supreme Council adopted the law about
1990 amendments and additions to the
Constitution of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist
Republic. The main achievement was that the
