            May, 15           The  opening  of  the  first  session  of  the
            1990              Supreme  Council  of  Ukrainian  Soviet
                              Socialist  Republic.    Two  blocks  of  deputies
                              were formed (group “239” – Communist, and
                              opposition  block  “People’s  Council”  with
                              125 members, headed by I. Yukhnovsky).
            June, 4           V.  Ivashko,  the  First  Secretary  of  CC  CPU,
            1990              was elected head of the Supreme Council.
            June, 19-22       At the 28-th CPU congress S. Hurenko was
            1990              elected the First Secretary. It was an attempt
                              to  improve  self-organization,  discipline  and
                              impact on opposition forces.
            June              The first assembly of the restored UAOC took
            1990              place  in  Kyiv.  Metropolitan  Mstyslav,  S.
                              Petliura’s  nephew,  was  proclaimed  the
                              patriarch of  Kyiv and the whole  Ukraine. In
                              October,  1990  he  returned  in  Ukraine  from
                              the USA.
            July, 16          The  Declaration  of  State  Sovereignty  of
            1990              Ukraine  was  approved  by  the  Supreme
                              Council.  V.  Ivashko  resigned  on  July,  9,
                              leaving  the  Communist  deputy  majority
                              without their  leader. “The People’s Council”
                              took advantage of that circumstance and put
                              “The  Declaration…”  on  vote.  355  deputies
                              voted  in  favour  of  it,  only  4  deputies  were
                              against  it.  The  parliamentaries’  position  was
                              under the influence of the fact, that the similar
                              document had been approved by the Supreme
                              Council  of  RSFSR.  The  preamble  of  the
                              declarations  secured  “state  sovereignty  as
