            February –        The  publication  and  discussion  of  the  draft
            March             program  of  the  People’s  Movement  (Rukh)
            1989              of  Ukraine)  for  perestroika.  The  draft
                              program  was  developed  in  the  Union  of
                              Writers  of  Ukraine.  In  spring  1989,  the
                              centres of Rukh appeared in different places.
                              By the end of the summer Rukh included 280
                              thousand members.
            July, 15-16       The  strikes  of  miners  in  Donbas  and
            1989              Western Ukraine.
            September,  8- The plenum of CC CPU took place with M.
            10                Horbachyov  present.  V.  Shcherbytsky  was
            1989              discharged  from  the  duties  of  the  First
                              Secretary  of  CC  CPU  due  to  his  retirement.
                              V. Ivashko was elected fro that position.
            October, 17       Ivano-Frankivsk      oblast     organization
            1989              “Memorial” was formed.
            October, 21       The  constituent  assembly  of  the  restored  T.
            1989              Shevchenko  Scientific  Society took  place  in
                              Lviv.
            October, 28       The  ecological  association  “Green  World”
            1989              was  established.  Y.  Shcherbak,  a  writer,
                              headed  it.  Its  goal  was  “ecological  society
                              solidarity”,  struggle  for  environment  purity
                              and conservation, personal and social safety.
            October, 28       The  Supreme  Council  of  Ukrainian  Soviet
            1989              Socialist Republic adopted the Law about the
                              state  status  of  the  Ukrainian  language.  It
                              was performed not only under the pressure of
                              community,  but  because  similar  laws  had
                              been adopted by other republics of the USSR.
