1989 Group from that, which protected human
rights, into a political organization, its former
members, political prisoners L. Lukyanenko,
V. Chornovil, B. And M. Horyn’, S Khmara,
O. Shevchenko proclaimed the establishment
of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union. L.
Lukyanenko was elected its head. First,
UHU developed a slogan of changing the
USSR into the confederation of republics.
Since September, 1989, it stepped on the way
of open propaganda for Ukraine's leaving the
USSR.
Summer The celebration of 1000-th anniversary of
1989 Rus christening. The dissidents used it to
draw attention to the state of UAOC
(Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church)
and UGCC (Ukrainian Greek-Catholic
