Terminological data bank is a structured collection of
information about the units of meaning and designation of a
special subject field addressed to the needs of a specific group of
users. It usually consists of a main database, which has the terms,
and a variable number of databases related to the main database
and sometimes to each other. Each of these databases has
information on some aspect of the terms. Traditionally
terminology data banks were created to meet very specific needs.
The first systematic terminological data banks appeared at the
beginning of the 1970s when changes in computer science allowed
the design of a structured system for storing information.
