governor-generals, who had almost unlimited
power;
Provinces were under the authority of a
governor together with Nobility Associations
headed by marshals of the nobility;
Provinces were divided into districts
headed by district police officers;
Judicial and administrative power over serfs
were in hands of landlords.
1797 The establishment of Heraldry commission.
It was formed to ennoble the former Cossack
starshyna and their descendants. They were to
prove their right to be ennobled 9on the basis
of family documents, like service in hetman
institutions, etc.). The commission was very
unpopular among Ukrainian nobility. It
existed till 1835.
1798 The first three parts of “Aeneid” by Ivan
Kotlyarevsky were published. It was the first
literary work printed in vivid folk Ukrainian.
It initiated folk Ukrainian literature
demonstrating the world richness, melody and
expressiveness of the Ukrainian language.
1776 The city of Katerynoslav (Dnipropetrovsk at
present) was founded.
1778 The city of Kherson was founded.
1783 The city of Sevastopil’ was founded.
1784 The Taurida Governorate was established on
the lands of the Crimean Khanate.
1785 The Buh Cossack Host was formed from
