Crimea itself was annexed to Russia.
            1785-1786         Ukrainian  Cossack  starshyna  and  szlachta
                              became  equal  in  rights  with  the  Russian
                              nobility.  They  were  guaranteed  personal
                              immunity,  inviolability  of  property  and
                              honour. They also got the right of free entry
                              to  the  country,  the  right  of  local  self-
                              government,  etc.  Cossack  starshyna  had  to
                              prove their belonging to szlachta.
                              Secularization  (confiscation)  of  monastery
                              lands  and  property  was  performed  in
                              Ukraine.  The  church  became  dependent  on
                              the state.

             THEME 11. Ukrainian land as a member of the Russian and
                                  Austrian empires.

            1772              The  first  division  of  Polish-Lithuanian
                              Commonwealth  by  Russia,  Prussia  and
                              Austria.  As  a  result,  Halychyna  went  to
                              Austria.
            1774              Having  taken  advantage  of  Turkey’s
                              weakening and the Russo-Turkish war (1768-
                              1774),  Austria  occupied  Bukovyna  in  1774.
                              According  to  Constantinople  convention  of
                              1775 of  Austria and  Turkey  Bukovyna went
                              to Austria.
            1783              Catherine   signed    the   manifest   about
                              annexation  of  the  Crimean  peninsula,
                              Taman’  peninsula  and  the  whole  region  of
                              Kuban’ to the Russian empire.
            1793-1795         The  second  division  of  Polish-Lithuanian
