courts (community court). New camp szlachta
courts were introduced instead. Hetmanate
was divided into 20 court districts. Each
district held the provincial land court dealing
with civil cases, pidkomorsky court dealing
with land cases and hrodsky court dealing
with criminal cases. General court was the
highest instance represented by 2 general
judges and elected officials from starshyna of
each regiment;
4) by the tsarina’s decree hetman was obliged
to report to Russian government about profits
and expenses of the Ukrainian state treasury;
5) one of the main signs of autonomy was
liquidated – the custom house on the border
of Hetmanate and Russia;
6) by K. Rozumovsky’s universal (order)
peasants were forbidden to move to a new
place of living, they had to get a written
landlord’s permission and leave all their
possessions to him.
1764 The abolition of Hetmanate. Catherine ІІ, on
becoming the Russian tsarina, in 1762
decided to unify the system of administration
in the whole empire, destroy all particular
features of Ukraine, thus turning it into an
ordinary province of Russia. In 1764 the
hetmanate in Ukraine was abolished. K.
Rozumovsky got a high pension, considerable
landed estates and the rank of Field-Marshal-
General. The governance of Ukraine was
given to the Second Little Russia Board
headed by the governor-general of Little
