1775 Destroyal of the Zaporozhian Sich. As a
result of the victorious final of the Russo-
Turkish war (1768-1774) and signing of
Kuchuk-Kaynadgyr peace treaty, Russia got
the outlet to the Black Sea. The support of
Zaporozhian Sich was not necessary any
more. Besides, Catherine ІІ was interested in
ruining Sich as a stronghold of freedom. By
secret order, the troops coming back from the
Russo-Turkish war, occupied the Sich and
destroyed it. Starshyna headed by kosh
otaman Petro Kalnyshevsky was arrested and
exiled to Siberia. Imperial regalia, the archive
and jewels were sent to Petersburg.
1781 The administrative division of the Left-bank
Ukraine in sotnyas and regiments was
abolished. Little Russia rule of governor-
general was introduced instead with three
regions – Kyiv, Chernyhiv and Novhorod-
Siversk. Each of them was divided into 11
districts. The Little Russia board lost its
validity.
1783 Cossack regiments of left-bank Ukraine
were abolished (there were 10 of them).
Carabineer regular regiments under command
of Russian officers were introduced instead.
1783 Peasants were forbidden to move from place
to place and thus Catherine ІІ introduced
serfdom.
