March, 5 The death of Y. Stalin. The beginning of
1953 struggle for party leadership in Moscow. The
leaders of Ukraine were involved in the
process too. One of the pretenders to the
power was L. Beria, who was supported by
punitive structures. However, he was arrested
in July and shot some time later. M.
Khrushchyov came to authority and
introduced the policy of de-Stalinization – a
new stage in society development.
June, 24 The plenum of CC CPU (since October, 1952
1953 CP(b)U got a new name – CPU) for the first
time elected O. Kyrychenko, a Ukrainian, to
be the head of CPU. He was assigned instead
of L. Melnykov, who was accused of
russification of higher school in Ukrainian
Soviet Socialist Republic and discrimination
of local personnel in regions of Western
Ukraine.
September The plenum of CPSU (a new name instead
1953 RCP(b) since 1952) outlined a set of
measures oriented at development of
agriculture. The main goal was to solve food
problems. The priority of that goal is proven
by the fact that for 11 years (1953-1964) 11
plenums of CC CPSU and 11 plenums of CC
CPU on agriculture development took place.
Due to its priority, agriculture became
profitable for the first time for many years. It
was the period of the highest raising in the
history of state and collective farm production
