eastern regions of Poland (Eastern Beskydy
area, Chelm area) into western and northern-
western regions, which Poland had obtained
from Germany. The operation was planned by
special services of Poland and coordinated
with the Soviet side. During the operation,
they were blocking the border with the USSR.
Six Polish army divisions surrounded
Ukrainian villages and took about 150
thousand Ukrainians by force. They wanted to
eliminate Ukrainian national minority and
destroy Ukrainian underground activity. On
new lands resettlers (this term was used
instead of “Ukrainian” in official documents)
were banned to live in cities, learn in the
native language and establish cultural-
educational institutions, etc.
December The resolution about monetary reform and
1947 abolition of rationing system. The monetary
reform was conducted at the expense of
population, mainly, peasants. The full value
exchange (1:1) referred only to deposits in
savings bank. They exchanged only 3
thousand Karbovanets; the rest was
exchanged 1:10. The abolition of rationing
system was a positive phenomenon, but lead
to price increase by 3 times. All these factors
caused decline in living standards.
August- The meetings in Kyiv, where genetics was
September fulminated as “a bourgeois pseudo-science”.
