February, 14– XX CPSU congress took place, where M.
25 Khrushchyov made a speech about Stalin’s
1956 cult. The policy of “Khrushchyov’s thaw”
started. It was a process of a certain
liberalization of social and cultural life,
amnesty, and rehabilitation of victims of
Stalin’s repressions. On June, 30, 1956, the
regulation of CCCPSU “About the cult
overcoming and its consequences” was
adopted.
February By the resolution of the CC CPU plenum, a
1955 campaign of corn crops extension started. In
1953, in Ukraine corn crops occupied about
2.2 mln. hectares including 1.8 mln. hectares
for grain. In 1955, corn crops made more than
5.2 mln. Hectares with 4.3 mln. hectares for
grain in particular. Corn was called “the
queen of fields” by M. Khrushchyov. Wheat
crops decreased substantially, corn occupied
20% of all acreage under crops in Ukraine.
This campaign demonstrated brightly a
subjective character of Khrushchyov’s
management, which lead to insufficiency of
grain. In 1963, USSR bought grain from the
USA and Canada for the first time.
June Shebelynka-Kyiv gas pipeline was put into
1956 operation.

1956 birthday.
March The session of the Supreme Council of
1957 Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, On the
basis of the adopted law about councils of
