1939 German troops attacked Poland, England and
France, according to pacts of mutual
assistance, declared war against Germany.
September, 17 The march of Red Army to Western Ukraine.
1939 In accordance with the secret protocol of
Molotov-Ribbentrop, the troops of Kyiv and
Bielorussian military districts crossed the
Zbruch river, the Polish-Soviet border.
Without any opposition, on September, 22 the
troops of Red Army entered Lviv and some
time later took almost the whole territory of
Western Ukraine under their control, as it had
been provided by the treaty.
September, 28 The treaty of the USSR and Germany about
1939 friendship and borders, which erased the
Polish state from the map of Europe. The
USSR borders stretched to the west for 250-
350 km.
September, 26- People’s assembly of Western Ukraine in
27 Lviv proclaimed the establishment of Soviet
1939 power on the Territory of Western Ukraine
and Declaration about joining the USSR.
November, 1 V Special Session of the Supreme Council of
1939 USSR adopted the law about annexation of
Western Ukraine to the composition of
USSR and the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist
Republic respectively. 6 new oblasts appeared
in the structure of Ukraine: Lviv, Stanislaviv
(Ivano-Frankivsk at present time),
Drohobych, Ternopil’, Volyn’ and Rivne.
Their territory was equal to 86 thousand
square kilometers with about 8 mln. of
population.
