September, 19 Army managed to stop the attack of German
1941 troops near Kyiv. But in the end of August,
tank fascist armies forced a crossing over the
Dnipro and surrounded the forces of South-
West front. Y. Stalin banned to leave Kyiv by
no means and take troops over the Dnipro
river. It caused the tragedy of encirclement.
Only on September, 17 the headquarters
agreed to retreat, but it was too late. Many
thousands of soldiers and officers died in
encirclement. General Kyrponos, a
commander of South-West front died too.
Nearly 660 thousand men were taken
prisoners.
August, 5 – The defence of Odesa. 73 days and nights
October, 16 lasted heroic defence of Odesa. During that
1941 time forces of Maritime army (commander
general I. Petrov) stemmed considerable
enemy forces (28 divisions). Only after
arriving of new German divisions, Soviet
troops left Odesa and retreated to the Crimea.
August, 20 The establishment of Reich commissariat
1941 “Ukraine” on the occupied Ukrainian lands.
It included 12 oblasts (Volyn’, Polissia, Right
Bank Ukraine, Poltava and Zaporizhzhia)
with the centre in Rivne. Eric Koch headed it.
Fascists eliminated the smallest signs of
statehood its territorial integrity and divided
Ukraine in several separate parts with a strict
occupation regime. Thus, Lviv, Stanislaviv,
Ternopil’ and Drohobych oblasts were
grouped in “Halychyna district”. It was
