1936 Moscow approved the new Constitution of
the USSR (the so-called Stalin’s
Constitution). On its basis, on December 25-
30 January, 1937, the extraordinary All-
Ukrainian Congress of Councils adopted the
new Constitution of the Ukrainian Soviet
Socialist Republic (the new official name).
There was a large gap between freedoms and
rights proclaimed and real processes, which
took place during totalitarian system of Stalin.
1937-1938 Mass repressions of Stalin’s regime in
Ukraine, so-called “big terror”. By the end
of 1937, nearly all republican party leaders
had been arrested. The Ukrainian government
changed 2 timed due to arrest in 1938. H.
Rakovsky, Y. Kotsyubynsky, S. Kosior, V.
Chubar and other leaders were shot. The
terror became total and involved all classes of
population. Millions of people became
victims to Stalin’s repressing machine. In
society denunciations, mutual suspiciousness
and fear spread. The main consequence of
mass repressions became the physical
extermination of the most active part of the
nation and moral corruption of those, who
stayed alive.
1937 The end of collectivization. 96.1% of peasant
farms and 99.7% of sown areas were united
into collective farms.
October, 11 Transcarpathia gained the status of autonomy
1938 within Czechoslovakia.
March, 15 The declaration of independence of
1939 Carpathian Ukraine. At the seym meeting,
