August The battle of Halych, when Russian troops
1914 occupied the whole eastern Halychyna and
the part of western Halychyna (they reached
the Visloka river, which is 80 km from
Krakiv) and nearly whole Bukovyna. The
Austrian army lost 400 thousand people
including 100 thousand captives. After
occupation of western Ukrainian lands by
Russian army, count Bobrynsky was assigned
a governor general. By decree of the tsarist
government all Ukrainian cultural institutions,
periodicals and newspapers were closed.
Many people were arrested including
metropolitan A. Sheptytsky. Such open
chauvinistic policy of occupation power
shocked wide circles of democratic
community in Ukraine and Russia.
May The formation of General Ukrainian Council
1915 (GUC) in Vienna as a result of unification of
GUC (25 people) and UUL (3 people) and
representatives from Bukovyna (6 people)/ K.
Levytsky became the head of the council.
They put it as their goal to gain independence
of Ukrainian lands as a separate part of
Austro-Hungary.
Spring- The retreat of Russian troops from Halychyna
