consciousness among people and unity of all
parts of Ukrainian nation. They were the first
ones to call their party a Ukrainian one. In
1895, at their congress, they adopted a
significant addition to the party programme:
“… The fulfillment of all its socialist ideals is
possible under the condition political
independence of Ukrainian people”.
1890-1899 The policy of “The New Era” in relations of
populists with Austrian government and Poles
in Halychyna. To soothe Ukrainians, Austrian
government made some concessions to them
and at the same time made Poles negotiate
and conduct more moderate policy in
Halychyna. O. Barvinsky and V. Antonovych
represented Ukrainian side. As a result of the
new era policy, a gymnasium was opened in
Kolomyia, the department of East Slavs’
history in Lviv university with M.
Hrushevsky as its head. But the policy fell
soon (1894).
1894 The formation of the first sports societies
“Sokil” (“The Falcon”) in Halychyna. V.
Nahirnyi, an engineer, became the first head
of the societies, then I. Bobersky, a teacher.
The society expanded for the whole territory
of Halychyna.
1895 For the first time in the history of political
thought Yulian Bachynsky advanced and
idea and supporting arguments of
