                              killed.  Ukrainian  community  admired  this
                              deed of Halychyna riflemen.
            June-             “The  Brusylov  Offensive”  of  the  Russian
            September         army.  It  occupied  the  whole  Southern
            1916              Halychyna and Bukovyna. The Austrian army
                              lost half a million of soldiers and officers. 133
                              riflemen  died  on  the  hills  of  Lyson’  near
                              Berezhany.  The  Cross  of  sorrow  and  glory
                              was put there to honour heroism and losses of
                              USR.
            November, 5       Germany  and  Austro-Hungary  proclaimed
            1916              independence  of  Polish  kingdom  from  the
                              Polish lands of the Russian Empire. The plans
                              of  Ukrainians  to  divide  Halychyna  into
                              eastern and western parts were never meant to
                              be.  It  affected  Ukrainian  movement  as
                              Halychyna  went  under  Polish  influence.  It
                              meant  there  was  no  chance  to  found  a
                              separate Ukrainian state.
            November          The  crisis  of  national  movement  on  western
            1916              Ukrainian lands. As a protest against Austro-
                              Hungarian    policy,   General    Ukrainian
                              Council headed by K. Levytsky, abnegated its
                              powers, Y. Petrushevych headed the national
                              movement.
