the 20-th cent. started in 1877 by a group of Transcarpathian
peasants, who went to the mines of
Pennsylvania. By the year of 1914, there were
about 700 thousand emigrants of Ukrainian
origin in the USA. In 1891 the emigration in
Canada started (two peasants I. Pylypiv and
V. Yelynyak from the village of Nebyhiv of
Stanislaviv region were the first ones to arrive
in Canada). By 1914 the number of
Ukrainians having emigrated to Canada,
increased up to 170 thousand people. In 1897
the emigration in Brazil started.
1900 In the village of Zavallya, Snyatyn district,
the first circle of firefighting society “Sich”
was founded. K. Trylyovsky, a lawyer,
founded it. This youth organization covered
the whole Halychyna. It paid a great attention
to education of youth based on Ukrainian
traditions of culture, education, military
cause. In 1912 The Ukrainian Sich Union was
formed to control local organizations.
January 1907 The arrest of 99 students of Lviv university
(“case 100”). They went on strike with a
demand of a separate Ukrainian university.
(Ukrainian students conducted their meeting
in 1899 for the first time with the foundation
of the Ukrainian university as a principal
issue). The arrested students declared a
hunger strike and the court set them free on

legal investigation.
