Halychyna. Ukrainians stood up for the idea
of Halychyna division into eastern
(Ukrainian) and Western (Polish). The Polish,
in their turn, wanted to see unified Halychyna
with Polish autonomy in the structure of the
Austrian monarchy. The program document
“The demands of Halychyna Ukrainians” was
developed, but it remained on paper.
July The elections to the Austrian parliament
1848 (Reichstag). As a result of the revolution of
1848, Ukrainians of Halychyna and
Bukovyna got the right to participate in
elections for the first time. Out of 96 deputies
from Halychyna 39 of them were Ukrainians:
27 peasants, 9 clergymen, 3 intellectuals. Five
out of eight deputies from Bukovyna were
Ukrainians (all of them represented
peasantry). Ukrainian deputies proposed to
consider issue of territorial-and-national
division of Halychyna, formation of regional
seim and government in eastern Halychyna.
The speech of deputy Ivan Kapushchak
(Lyakhovets village, Stanislav district)
became known. He stressed that “landlords
have no rights to get money for peasant
freedom as they already have it as their
peasants’ backs whipped”. More than 200
thousand signatures were collected to support
the idea of Halychyna division, but the
Austrian government did not meet that
demand. In March, 1849 the parliament was
dissolved.
