etc.    At  3  p.m.  the  rebels  surrendered.  On
                              November,  3,  the  state  of  siege  was
                              introduced in Lviv. (On January, 10, 1849 the
                              whole  Halychyna  was  in  the  state  of  siege).
                              Repressions started.
            November, 1       The  meeting  of  village  communities  of  the
            1848              whole Bukovyna (initiated by L. Kobylytsya)
                              took place in Chernivtsi. The members rose in
                              opposition  against  the  Austrian  government
                              intention  to  separate  Bukovyna       from
                              Halychyna.
            November, 16      The  Reichstag  deputy  L.  Kobylytsya  at  the
            1848              meeting  of  2600  peasants  in  Vyzhnytsya
                              called  them  to  fight  with  landlords.  The
                              uprising  covered  mountainous  villages  of
                              Vyzhnytsya  and  Stirizhynets  districts.  L.
                              Kobylytsya’s  horsed  groups  fought  against
                              government troops until the summer of 1849.
                              The  leader was captured in 1850, he died  in
                              October, 1851 after severe tortures.
            1848              The first Ukrainian reading hall was opened
                              in Kolomyia.
            1849              ‘The Bach reaction” (by the surname of the
                              Minister  of  Internal  Affairs)  in  Halychyna.
                              After the revolution defeat, the new Emperor
                              Franz  Joseph  (Ferdinand  I,  who  was
                              considered  too  liberal,  abdicated  the  throne
                              under the pressure of reactionaries) renounced
                              nearly  all  freedoms  declared  in  1848.  The
                              parliament was dissolved (March, 1849), the
                              Constitution was abolished. The situation was
                              even  more  complicated  for  Halychyna
                              Ukrainians,  because  Ahenor  Holukhovsky,
