separate administrations. The departments of
                              SRC were established to deal with education,
                              finances, peasant issues, etc.  The centres of
                              SRC included about 50 local councils and 12
                              district councils. The Council started to form
                              units  of  national  guard.  Austrians  refused  to
                              meet political demands of SRC and restricted
                              its  activity  to  cultural  and  educational
                              functions.
            May, 15           The  first  issue  of  the  first  Ukrainian
            1848              newspaper    “Galician    Dawn”     (“Zorya
                              Halytska”)  was  published.  In  Lviv.  A.
                              Pavenetsky became its editor. The first issue
                              included  appeal  of  SRC,  claiming  that
                              Ukrainians  of  Halychyna  and  Dnieper
                              Ukraine have to be regarded as one nation.
            May, 23           Under the pressure of the Central Council of
            1848              People  a  part  of  Ukrainian  nobility  and
                              intellectuals, who did not want to isolate from
                              higher  social  classes,  formed  their  own
                              organization – the Rus Council. It put it as a
                              goal to place Ukrainian movement under the
                              Polish  one  and  stood  for  independence  of
                              Poland under Habsburgs’ rule. The  began to
                              publish  newspaper  “Diary  of  Rus”  with  I.
                              Vahylevych  as  its  editor.  Prince  Lev  Sapiha
                              headed the Council.
            June 1848         The  Slavic  Congress  in  Prague.  The
                              members  of  the  Supreme  Rus  Council,  the
                              Central  Council  of  the  People  and  the  Rus
                              Council    were   the    representatives   of
                              Halychyna.  The  congress  tried  to    reconcile
