                              headed it.
            October, 19       The  first  congress  of  people  engaged  in
            1848              cultural  and  science  life  of  Ukraine  took
                              place  –  “The  Assembly  of  Ruthenian
                              Scholars”.  The  congress  members  (119
                              people)  supported  the  necessity  of  wide
                              implementation  of  the  Ukrainian  language
                              into cultural and  educational  life of  Western
                              Ukraine. The Ukrainian language became the
                              language  of  instruction  in  people’s  schools
                              and a subject in gymnasiums.
            October, 25       The Supreme Ruthenian Council founded a
            1848              cultural  and  educational  society  “Galician-
                              Ruthenian     Mother”     (”Halytsko-Ruska
                              Matytsya”) in Lviv. The members set it as a
                              goal  to  publish  popular  cheap  books,
                              textbooks  in  Ukrainian.  M.  Kuzemsky,  a
                              clergyman,  became  the  first  head  of  the
                              society.
            November, 1-2  The armed uprising in Lviv. It was organized
            1848              by a Polish democratic society. In response to
                              shooting  at  civil  population  by  government
                              troops,  workers  and  students  built  23
                              barricaded in the streets of Lviv. Close fights
                              between troops  and the rebels occurred, The
                              Polish, Ukrainians and Jews fought together.
                              On November, 2, government troops gunned
                              the city for 2.5 hours, about 650 shells were
                              used.  There  were  55  killed  and  75  people
                              wounded.  As  a  result,  fires  started,  which
                              destroyed the university library of great value,
                              a theatre, a polytechnic academy, a city hall,
