They were all in Ukrainian.
1831 ”Cholera riots” in Transcarpathia. They
were caused by restrictions (quarantine,
movement ban) introduced because of cholera
epidemic. But the real reasons rooted in the
system of existing land relations and hard life
of peasants. Regular troops suppressed the
riot. After those riots the government
abolished a part of secondary duties (law of
1836).
1832-1837 The activity of ‘Rus Triad’ – a public cultural
society of democratic and enlightening
character. It appeared in 1832 in Lviv.
Markiyan Shashkevych, Ivan Vahylevych and
Yakiv Holovatsky became its founders. The
society included 20 people. The members
gathered folklore, recorded folk songs and
narrations, words and expressions. They
prepared manuscript collections “The Son of
Rus” (1833), ‘The Dawn” (1834), but they
failed to publish them. With the help of the
printed word they were trying “to raise the
spirit of people, enlighten people”, help
people realize their dignity and power. In
1836 I. Vahylevych translated “The Tale of
Ihor’s Campaign” into Ukrainian. In 1836 M.
Shashkevych prepared “Reader”
(“Chytanka”) for children, it was published in
1850 after the author’s death. In 1837 they
managed to publish almanac “The Mermaid
of Dniester” (“Rusalka Dnistrovaya”) in
Budapest. It was the first book in Halychyna
published in the folk Ukrainian language. It
