or our energy policy, we need bold reforms that are equal to the monumental challenges we face. I’m running to
transform America’s economic foundation, and give the American people the tools to compete in the 21st
Century. If we succeed, we can leave to our children and grandchildren a safer, healthier, more secure, more
prosperous future. That is our obligation to the next generation – to your generation – and it’s an obligation we
must and will fulfill.

Simultaneous Interpreting
Scholar G. E. Miram suggests a complex of exercises he considers useful for the training both
consecutive and simultaneous interpreting:
1. First of all students should be acquainted with the information relating to the topic. One of the
students prepares the report in English on the topic, other students ask him questions and then they discuss the
material.
2. The students listen to the text without any additional materials. The task is to understand the text. The
teacher controls the understanding asking questions.
3. A short lecture of the teacher on the specificity of the language and stylistic peculiarities of the text.
4. The learners listen to the English text with the script and mark the pauses.
5. The students shadow the text in English trying to copy the intonation of the speakers.
6. The students receive the list of words and word-combinations of the video fragment in Ukrainian.
The task is to write down English equivalents. When the task is done students have to learn the recommended
vocabulary.
7. The repetition of the sixth stage until the vocabulary is learnt properly.
8. Simultaneous reading of the Ukrainian Translation of the English text.
9. Simultaneous interpreting into Ukrainian without any script.
10. Simultaneous interpreting into English with the Ukrainian script. There are basic statements that
should be taken into consideration while teaching professional interpreting. These are the following:
1. Teaching of the professional interpreter/translator should be of training nature. New material for the
initial acquisition should be minimal.
2. The main task of teaching interpreting is to work out the automatic actions of the learners. It can be
done through:
– repeating material for many times;
– doing a lot of different exercises on the basis of the same lexical material;
– interpreting from one language into another and vice versa of the same text;
– working out the skill of the fast speech and ultimate reaction on the change of the exercise (for
instance reading simultaneously the translation with some untranslatable fragments, switching from interpreting
into the native tongue).
3. The training should be done using polythemetical and multigenra material. One of the aims of the
training to work out the ability of the learners to interpret the texts of any genre, style, and topic. The attention
should be paid on the methods of preparing to interpret the text on the certain topic and to choose the material to
remember.
