January 1648 The start of the national liberation struggle.
B. Khmelnetsky was elected to be a hetmane.
Zaporizhzhya Sich was under the authority of
B. Khmelnytsky. He sent out universals with
the call for Ukrainian people to uprise. New
military sub-units were formed. He conducted
negotiations with the Crimean Khan Islyam
Hiray ІІІ. It gave an opportunity to solve two
problems of great importance: 1) to receive
pledging of security in the south from attacks
of Tatars; 2) to get Tatar light-footed horse
cavalry. Otherwise, it would have been close
to impossible to beat the Polish on the wide
spaces.
April The battle of Zhovti Vody. B. Khmelnytsky
1648 took advantage of disunity of the Polish army
(one part with S. Pototsky at head was
advancing on dry land, the other part with I.
Barabash and I. Karayimovych was going in
boats along the Dnieper river. Their plan was
to get united under the fortress of Kodak) and
defeated S. Pototsky’s detachment of Zhovti
Vody. The register Cossacks of the other part
rose in revolt under the head of F. Dzhalaliy,
killed enemies and joined B. Khmelnytsky’s
army.
May The battle of Korsun. B. Khmelnytsky did not
