Later, thanks to P. Mohyla’s efforts, it gained
the status of Academy in 1701.
1635 The Cossacks headed by Ivan Sulyma
captured the newly built fortress Kodak.
Which blocked the path to the Sich for
fugitives and controlled all movement
towards the Sich. The seizure of the fortress
caused new Cossack uprising lasting for a
short time, because Cossack starshyna
captured I. Sulyma and his allies to give them
up to the Polish government. I. Sulyma was
executed in Warsaw.
1637 The Cossack-peasant uprising headed by
Pavlo But (Pavliuk). In summer of 1637 the
uprising headed by hetman P. But and his
associate
Karpo Skydan broke out. The uprising
covered left-bank and right-bank Ukraine.
The rebels were defeated under Kumeiky and
Borovytsia.
January The passage of “Ordination of Zaporozhian
1638 army” by the Polish seim, according to
which:
1) The register decreased to 6 thousand and
included only those Cossacks, who did not
take part in the uprising;
2) the electivity of Cossack starshyna was
abolished;
3) Cossack legal proceedings were cancelled;
4) instead of the elected hetman the Polish
commissar was appointed to be a king;
5) the representatives of Polish szlachta were
appointed to the posts of colonels and
