Kyiv, Bratslav, Volhynia and was aimed
against suppression of magnates and szlachta,
decreasing of the Cossack register, etc. It
ended in failure.
1594– 1596 The Cossack-peasant uprising headed by
Severyn Nalyvaiko. He together with the
registered Cossacks, hetman Hryhoriy Loboda
and colonel Shaula crossed Podillya,
Volhynia, Polissya, Bilorus taking
contribution from rich cities and szlachta
estates. Under Bila Tserkva the rebels were
defeated by Polish hetman Stanislav
Zholkevskyi and fell back over the Dnieper
river. In May 1596 they were surrounded in
Solonytsia (near Lubny, Poltava region). The
traitors captured the leaders of the uprising
and gave them up to the Polish. Nalyvaiko
was executed in Lviv.
1596 The Union of Brest, according to which, the
part of the Orthodox united with with the
Catholic church and placed themselves under
the Pope of Rome. As a result, the new
Church appeared in Ukraine – Ukrainian
Greek Catholic Church, also known as the
Uniat Church. It led to acute ideological fight
of Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
1600– 1602 The hetmanate of Samiylo Kishka, who spent
25 years in Turkish captivity. He restored
Cossack privileges and rights lost after S.
Nalyvaiko’s uprising. The Cossacks took an
active part in campaigns against Wallachia
and Livonia, where he lost his life.
