buy out all the machinery. It included 108
thousand tractors, nearly 43 thousand
combines and other machinery, which was
worth 4.2 bln. krb. It was a severe strike to
budget of collective farms.
April The Supreme Council of Ukrainian Soviet
1958 Socialist Republic adopted the Law about
popular schooling. General 8-year education
was introduced. The law gave parents the
right to select a language of instruction for
their children. It was actually used for
russification of Ukrainian schooling.
October S. Bandera was assassinated in Munich.

February The first reactor was put into practice in

November The underground railway was brought into
1960 action in Kyiv.
January The trial in Lviv over members of the
1961 Ukrainian Workers’ and Peasants’ Union,
which appeared in 1958 and put it as a goal to
make Ukraine leave the USSR by
constitutional means. L. Lukyanenko, I.
Kandyba, S. Virun and V. Lutskyi were
imprisoned.

May, 22 The beginning of unofficial feast in honour of
1961 T. Shevchenko on the day of his ashes
reburial in Ukraine.
October, 17–31 XXII congress of CPSU in Moscow approved
1961 a new CPSU programme – the programme of
communism construction.
