            May, 24           The fire (it was an arson according to one of

                              in  Kyiv.  600  thousand  volumes  of  valuable
                              and unique literary works were destroyed.
            October, 14       The  plenum  of  CC  CPSU  discharged  M.
            1964              Khrushchyov  from  the  position  of  the  First
                              Secretary  of  CC  CPSU  and  pensioned  him
                              off.  Leonid  Brezhnev  was  elected  for  the
                              position of the First Secretary.

                   CHAPTER VІ. UKRAINE IN THE PERIOD OF

                   THEME 16. Ukraine in the period of stagnation.

            March             The  plenum  CC  CPSU  reviewed  an  issue
            1965              about urgent actions of further development
                              of  agriculture.  A  new  procedure  of
                              agricultural  production  procurement  was
                              approved, plans of purchases were approved,
                              purchase  prices  were  raised,  expenses  for
                              agriculture  were  redistributed,  etc.  These
                              actions  revived  agricultural  production  to  a
                              certain  extent,  but  they  failed  to  change
                              matters  substantially.  They  did  not  change
                              relations of production in village.
            Summer-           A  wave  of  mass  arrests  among  Ukrainian
            autumn            intelligentsia. 60 people were arrested.
