April The protest of 139 figures of Ukrainian
1968 culture, science and art was addressed to L.
Brezhnev, O. Kosygin, M. Pidhornyi. They
were against arrests and political trials of
1986-1955 and oppression of Ukrainian
culture. New repressions started.
November, 5 A worker from Dnipropetrovs’k Vasyl’
1968 Makukh burnt himself alive in Khreshchatyk
as a protest against repressions in Ukraine
suppression the process of democratization in
Czechoslovakia. The so-called “Prague
spring” was meant – the transition of
Brezhnev’s governing to the rails of
Neostalinism.
March CC CPU approved the resolution “About
1969 increase of responsibility of leaders of press,
radio, television, cinematography, cultural
institutions for ideological and political
contents of materials printed and repertory.
The resolution made it obligatory to oppose
any manifestations of "bourgeois ideology:
and "nationalism". Since that moment,
ideological control of intelligentsia activity
became total: the smallest signs of free
thought were persecuted and badgered.
June The letter of Ukrainian political prisoners
1969 regarding political repressions in Ukraine
was secretly sent to UNO commission of
human rights protection.
