Kremenchuk. However, in the end of May the
detachments were defeated in Poltava region,
near the city of Kobeliaky. Later, Hryhoryev,
with remnants of his troops, tried to join
otaman N. Makhno, who controlled a large
territory in the region of Huliaypole
(Katerynoslav), but he was killed by N.
Makhno’s order.
May-June 1919 The offensive of A. Denikin’s White Guard
army against Ukraine. During may A.
Denikin’s army occupied Donbas. In June, it
seized Kharkiv and Katerynoslav. The White
Guardists set the terrible occupation regime.
A. Denikin’s programme was oriented at
restoration of “unified and indivisible Russia”
and failed to recognize independence of
Ukraine. Three regions were formed on the
territory of occupied Ukraine: Kharkiv, Kyiv
and Novorossiysk regions with governor-
generals as heads. Capital punishment was
introduced, Ukrainian schools were banned,
T. Shevchenko’s monuments and portraits
were ruined, etc.
June, 1 1919 The conclusion of military-political and
economic union of Soviet republics in
Moscow. The participating republics were
Russia, Latvia, Lithuania and Byelorussia.
The authority of republics was liquidated in
most important affairs: military science,
national economy, railway transport, finance
and labour. They were proclaimed to be
common and passed under management of
