                              The attempt failed. The crew brought the ship
                              to  Romanian  port  Constanta,  where  they
                              handed  “The  Appeal  to the  Whole  Civilized
                              World” to foreign reporters and consuls.
            October, 17       Tsar Nicholas II of Russia approved Manifest
             1905             “About improvement of the state system”. It
                              ‘granted” civic freedoms, personal immunity,
                              freedom  of  speech,  freedom  of  conscience,
                              freedom of press, meetings and societies. The
                              State Duma was founded.
            October 1905      The  establishment  of  chauvinistic  Black-
                              Hundred  organization  “The  Union  of  the
                              Russian People”, which was active in many
                              cities  of  Ukraine.  O.  Dubrovin,  V.
                              Puryshkevych were its leaders. It committed a
                              row  of  bloody  Jewish  pogroms  in  Odesa,
                              Kyiv, Chernihiv.
            November          In  Sevastopil  seamen  of  12  vessels  of  the
             15-16, 1905      Black  Sea  Fleet  uprose.  Lieutenant  P.
                              Schmidt headed it. They demanded from the
                              tsar  to  call  the  Statutory  meeting.  After  13-
                              hour  battle  the  uprising  was  suppressed.  P.
                              Schmidt  and  his  officers  were  shot  on
                              Berezan island in the Black Sea.
            November, 18,     The  uprising  of  three  sapper  companies
            1905              headed  by  B.  Zhadanivsky  in  Kyiv.  Four
                              thousand workers joined nearly a thousand of
                              soldiers.  Government  troops  crushed  the
                              uprising.
            December, 18-     “The Tragedy of Sorochyntsi”. The uprising
