1897 The foundation of general Ukrainian
Organization (GUO) on the basis of the
former communities united them into a free
federation headed by the Council. V.
Antonovych and O. Konysky headed it.
1900 The formation of the first Ukrainian
political party – the Revolutionary Ukrainian
Party (RUP) took place at the meeting of
student communities in Kharkiv. D.
Antonovych, M. Rusov, L. Matsiyevych, B.
Kamensky were its founders. M.
Mikhnovsky, a lawyer, worked out the party’s
program, which was outlined in the brochure
‘Independent Ukraine” 91900). The main goal
was to establish an independent, free
Ukrainian state: “the only one, inseparable,
free, independent Ukraine from the
Carpathians to the Caucasians”. Other social-
economic and political issues were not
included into the program. Soon (in the first
issue of newspaper ‘Haslo” of 1903) RUP
actually receded their program brochure
‘Independent Ukraine”. Instead of the slogan
from 'Cobzar” “Fight-You Win!” they
accepted the slogan “proletariats of the world,
unite!”. In 1904 the project of the party
program was developed, where RUP dropped
the idea of independence of Ukraine and
