LECTURE 4
Asyndetic Noun Clusters and Rendering Their Meaning into Ukrainian
I Syndetic and asyndetic connection.
Present-day English is mainly analytical in structure and the principal means of
its grammatical connection are naturally analytical. They may be syndetic
(prepositional) and asydentic (non-prepositional). These two forms of analytical
connection are very often of equal relevance due to which they are interchangeable;
books for home reading (syndetic connection);
home-reading books (asyndetic connection);
e.g.
books at the university library (syndetic connection);
the university library books. (asyndetic connection)

Asyndetic noun clusters are word-groups, consisting of two or more nouns which

Київського Динамо
Asyndetic noun clusters are binary by their nature. They consist of two components:

2. An attributive component, which is the adjunct of the word-group.
Both the nucleus or the adjunct may consist of one word or several words.
school reform - шкільна реформа
(adjunct) (nucleus)
House of Commons debate – дебати в Палаті громад
e.g. (adjunct) (nucleus)
US foreign policy – зовнішня політика США

noun clusters. Components like “House of Commons” or “US” are to be treated as
single adjuncts, since they function as a single Ncompound or
Nabbreviated. Even the two words “foreign policy” represent a single adjective-noun
unit AN. Consequently, the word-combination “US foreign policy” may be
schematically represented as
