New garbage bins benefit business, city
In an endeavor that is sure to save the city money, the marketing
firm TochkaRu is planning a new approach to business in
Ukraine, while also providing a public service. The company
intends to install hundreds of illuminated, glass garbage bins in
and around the city over the next few years, but not without a trick:
The bins will display paid advertisements.
TochkaRu will finance the production, installation and maintenance
of the bins. The company will also have to pay rent to the city for
the right to install outdoor trash receptacles.
Vitaly Kozak, head of the city administration's investment agency,
said the initiative would free up an estimated Hr 4.5 million
annually, which could be spent on other needs.
"More than Hr 5 million a year is spent to install and maintain
Kyiv's 5,000 trashcans, which is still not enough," Kozak said. The
city spends an average of Hr 3 per day, per bin, he added.
The first set of 150-kilogram bins will be installed in the city's
downtown area. The first test bin has been installed at 143
Saksahanskoho.
The bins will be installed in stages, with 450 bins to be installed by
the end of2003.
"By the end of next year we should have between 1,000 and
1,500 bins around the city, and in five years, we expect to set up
3,000 bins," said Ruslan Morkva, TochkaRu's director.
