The criteria for multiculturalism for a person are: possession of a national
culture that promotes the development of patriotism, awareness of one's own
culture, which makes it possible to form certain cultural values; a cross-cultural
criterion or criterion of existence in a multicultural environment, which includes
the non-conflict co-existence of different cultures and cultivation of respect for the
rights and belongings of a person representing another culture, the ability of a
person to adapt to existence in multicultural conditions; an emotional criterion that
involves a positive attitude towards other cultures, perceptions of their views and
thoughts.
Thus, multiculturalism plays an important role in the implementation of
intercultural communication, as it is the basis for creation of a new society capable
of communicating without ethnic, religious, racial and cultural barriers.
Consequently, at a present stage of societal development, the formation of a
multicultural outlook of a personality in the process of intercultural communication
contributes to resolving intercultural conflicts, helping establish the atmosphere of
co-operation of "multi-language" communicants in socio-political and economic
spheres of human existence.
According to scientist F. Batsevych, intercultural communication is the
process of communication (verbal and non-verbal) of people (groups of people)
who belong to different national lingual and cultural communities, use different
idioethnic languages, feel lingual and cultural "foreignness" of their partner, have a
different communicative competence that can cause communicative failures or
cultural shock. By definition provided by O. Kotenko, multiculturalism is a special
system-forming component in the structure of an individual, its quality, which
involves recognition of the diversity of cultural space and the ability to
intercultural interaction.
According to O. Mordan, the formation of a multicultural personality is a
complex and rich process requiring not only knowledge of the peculiarities of
personality development, but also the awareness of the inevitability of its existence
in a multicultural, multi-ethnic world, the need to be ready for communication with
representatives of different countries, ethnic groups, people who have different
color of skin, language, habits, traditions, daily rituals, etc..
It should be noted that an important aspect in the process of becoming a
multiculturalist communicator is person’s sociability, since the ability to establish a
comfortable, positive atmosphere during communication between representatives
of different cultural preferences is a significant factor contributing to achievement.
